Primary concept: Mismatch Theory. Vestigial Pattern Bias is Mismatch Theory applied to specific cognitive patterns - responses shaped for past environments.
When it shows up
When applying methods that worked during an early learning phase to later mastery attempts. In expert witness testimony: when a specialist forgets what they did not know at the time of an event. In code documentation: when a developer cannot reconstruct the reasoning behind their own decisions three months later.
Failure mode
Being imprisoned by the habits that worked before. Technical students who can't improvise. Experts who can't play. Masters who can't forget.
Countermeasure
Periodically attempt work without your habitual frameworks. Ask: "What would I do if my usual approach were unavailable?" Force yourself out of the patterns that early success encoded.
