Definition
A person who holds a non-typical constellation of beliefs, making them unpredictable to their tribe and often leading to social pressure to conform.
When it shows up
When you hold nuanced views in a polarised environment; when your position doesn't map cleanly onto a tribe. In expert witness testimony: when a specialist forgets what they did not know at the time of an event. In code documentation: when a developer cannot reconstruct the reasoning behind their own decisions three months later.
Failure mode
Social ostracism from multiple groups for refusing to fully join either. The cost of epistemic integrity in tribal environments.
Countermeasure
Accept the social cost of nuanced positions as a feature, not a bug. Ask: "Am I being attacked from both sides because I'm wrong or because I'm right?"
