This is a Lexicon entry: the mechanism, when it shows up, and the countermeasure. The full correction, with real-world cases and the audit prompt, hasn't been written yet.

Definition

The relief gained by naming a problem (pathologizing it), which makes it feel manageable even if the diagnosis is wrong.

When it shows up

When something that was causing anxiety or confusion is finally named or diagnosed. In expert witness testimony: when a specialist forgets what they did not know at the time of an event. In code documentation: when a developer cannot reconstruct the reasoning behind their own decisions three months later.

Failure mode

Over-reliance on naming as a cure. Feeling resolution from a label without the underlying problem being addressed. The diagnosis that feels like treatment.

Countermeasure

Treat naming as a beginning of understanding, not an end. Ask: "Now that I know what this is called, what can I actually do about it?"
