Definition

A gauge of self-centeredness based on how many times a person uses "I" and "me" when discussing non-personal topics.

When it shows up

Dating patterns where the count of partners matters more than the quality of relationship. Accumulation as achievement.

Failure mode

Relationships become trophies to add to the count. The experience of relationship is subordinated to the accumulation. Each encounter is evaluated as 'did this add to the count?' rather than 'did this meet the need?'

Countermeasure

Ask what function the counting serves. Usually it serves an underlying narrative about worth or validation that the count cannot actually deliver. Address the need directly if possible; counting is a substitute that doesn't satisfy.
