Definition

The phenomenon where spacing out the repetition of information makes it easier to remember in the long term.

When it shows up

Learning any material that must be retained: languages, exam prep, skill acquisition. Contrast: cramming before a deadline.

Failure mode

Not a failure; a learning principle. Spaced repetition produces better long-term retention than massed practice (cramming). Same total study time; drastically different retention.

Countermeasure

Break study into spaced sessions separated by hours to days. Use spaced-repetition tools (Anki) for flashcard learning. Retention gain is 2-3x without additional effort; the only cost is patience.
