Definition

The finding that information is far better retained and understood when actively generated - written, explained, taught or reformulated - than when passively received. The act of producing an explanation forces the brain to connect information into networks rather than store it as isolated facts and the effort of retrieval during generation dramatically improves long-term memory consolidation.

When it shows up

When studying, learning or trying to communicate something clearly to yourself or others. In expert witness testimony: when a specialist forgets what they did not know at the time of an event. In code documentation: when a developer cannot reconstruct the reasoning behind their own decisions three months later.

Failure mode

Passive re-reading that produces familiarity without deep retention. The illusion of learning from repeated exposure without retrieval.

Countermeasure

Explain the concept to someone else or write it out from memory. Accept the difficulty of active generation as evidence that deep learning is occurring.
