Category: BiasEvidence: ReplicatedUniversality: HighTier 1Type: Mechanismⓘ what these mean

This is a Lexicon entry: the mechanism, when it shows up, and the countermeasure. The full correction, with real-world cases and the audit prompt, hasn't been written yet.

Definition

The evolved belief that accomplishing a specific goal will result in lasting happiness, when in reality, happiness is a moving horizon.

When it shows up

After achieving a major goal; when anticipating the happiness an achievement will bring; when 'when I get X, then I will be happy' thinking is active.

Failure mode

Making poor long-term decisions based on overestimated future wellbeing. Pursuing achievements, relationships or acquisitions whose emotional payoff evaporates on arrival.

Countermeasure

Ask people who have already achieved what you are pursuing how they actually feel now. Their reports are far more accurate than your predictions. Expect happiness to be milder and shorter than forecast.
