This is a Lexicon entry: the mechanism, when it shows up, and the countermeasure. The full correction, with real-world cases and the audit prompt, hasn't been written yet.
When it shows up
Horoscopes, personality tests, psychic readings, cold reading techniques. The Barnum Effect is the specific experimental demonstration: subjects rate generic personality descriptions as highly accurate when told the description was generated specifically for them. Fortune cookies feel profound at 2am. Personality quizzes feel insightful because they confirm what we already suspect.
Failure mode
Accepting unfalsifiable personality assessments as genuine insight. Paying for psychic readings, unvalidated personality tests or coaching frameworks built on subjective validation rather than evidence. Feeling "seen" by a system that sees nothing.
Countermeasure
Ask: "Would this description apply equally well to most people I know?" If yes, the specificity is illusory. Demand falsifiable predictions, not retrospective fit. Check overlap with Barnum Effect.
