Definition

Primary concept: Groupthink. Preference Falsification is Groupthink's hidden engine - privately disagreeing while publicly conforming.

When it shows up

Political polls in authoritarian states. Workplace surveys about the boss. Family discussions of contentious topics. Any setting where the cost of honesty exceeds the cost of public agreement.

Failure mode

Stated preferences are tuned to perceived social consequences, not to private belief. Decisions made on the basis of aggregated stated preference are systematically wrong, because the data was manufactured by the pressure of stating.

Countermeasure

Build anonymous channels for sensitive opinions. Discount polls in settings where honesty is costly. Watch what people do, not what they say, when stakes are real.
