Definition
The tendency for parents to overattribute their children's traits, successes and failures to their own parenting, underestimating the role of genetics, peers and chance.
When it shows up
When parents interpret a child's success as confirmation of their parenting quality; when parents interpret a child's failure as evidence of their parenting failure - in both directions.
Failure mode
Over-crediting parenting for outcomes substantially driven by genetics, peer groups or chance. Under-crediting external factors when a child struggles. Parenting advice culture built on survivorship bias from a non-random sample.
Countermeasure
When attributing a child's outcome to parenting, ask: 'What was the baseline probability of this outcome across all children in similar circumstances?' Distinguish what parents can genuinely control from what they cannot.
