Definition
The disposition to recognise that your current beliefs and conclusions may be wrong, that your reasoning may be flawed and that others - including those you disagree with - may hold relevant knowledge or perspectives you have not considered. Intellectual humility is distinct from wishy-washy relativism: it is compatible with strong views held with calibrated confidence. Research shows intellectually humble people update their views more accurately in response to new evidence and are rated as better conversational partners.
When it shows up
Any strong-held belief. Moments when you feel certain on complex topics.
Failure mode
Confidence often exceeds evidence quality. The feeling of knowing is an imperfect signal of knowing. The gap is invisible to the one holding the belief.
Countermeasure
Add genuine probability weight on being wrong, especially to strong beliefs. Not as ritual but as real calibration. Say 'I think' rather than 'I know' when the evidence admits uncertainty.
