This is a Lexicon entry: the mechanism, when it shows up, and the countermeasure. The full correction, with real-world cases and the audit prompt, hasn't been written yet.
When it shows up
Choosing between a 55" and 65" TV. Comparing salary offers $5K apart. Selecting between two apartments with slightly different finishes. Agonizing over phone model upgrades.
Failure mode
Overpaying for marginal upgrades that provide zero experienced utility difference. Decision paralysis over distinctions that won't survive contact with daily life.
Countermeasure
Ask: "Will I notice this difference in three months?" If both options exceed your threshold, pick the cheaper one. Evaluate options in isolation when possible.
