Privacy

This site is static. There are no accounts, no logins and no forms that send data anywhere. It measures visits two ways, one of which only runs if you say yes.

For every visitor: Cloudflare Web Analytics

The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which counts page views, the page you came from, your country and your browser type. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device and does not fingerprint you or follow you to other sites. As the host, Cloudflare also handles your IP address to deliver the pages, the same as any web host.

Only if you click Accept: Google Analytics

With your consent, Google Analytics 4 measures how the site is used: which pages you read, for how long, roughly where you are and what device you use. It sets cookies whose names start with _ga. Google receives your IP address to do this but GA4 does not store it. The data is kept for two months, Google's default. Until you click Accept the Google script is not even downloaded.

You can change your mind at any time with cookie settings, also in the footer of every page. Declining after accepting deletes the _ga cookies.

On your device only

Your browser's local storage keeps three things that never leave your device: your cookie choice, your display theme and any decision audits you save in theDecision Audit tool. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Fonts and images

Fonts are served from this site, not from Google. Portraits on the Origins page load from third-party hosts such as Wikimedia, which see your IP address when the image loads.

Substack

Subscribe links and the email boxes take you to Substack to sign up. The address you type in an email box is not sent to or stored by this site. Substack's own privacy terms apply once you are there.

Your rights

You can ask what data relates to you, or ask for it to be deleted, athello@cogniqos.com. In practice this site holds nothing that identifies you. Analytics data sits with Cloudflare and Google.
