Definition
A goal-setting strategy in which a person specifies not just what they intend to do but when, where and how they will do it - forming a concrete "if-then" plan: "If it is 7am on Monday, then I will put on my running shoes and go to the park." Peter Gollwitzer's research shows implementation intentions dramatically increase follow-through compared to simple goal intentions, because they automate the initiation of behaviour by anchoring it to specific situational cues.
When it shows up
Goal-setting that needs to survive contact with daily life. Vague commitments that keep failing to activate.
Failure mode
A general intention ('I'll exercise more') provides no trigger for action. The specific moment of decision arrives and there is nothing to start it so it doesn't start.
Countermeasure
Specify 'if-then' plans: 'If it is 7am on a weekday, then I put on running shoes and walk out the door.' The trigger is externally observable; the action is specified; the decision is pre-made.
